Utica sets 3% marijuana sales tax

As other Illinois communities have done in recent weeks, Utica trustees approved an ordinance Thursday that places a 3% tax on the sale of any “adult use cannabis” in the village starting next year. Village President David Stewart said state law mandates cities must establish such ordinances before Oct. 1 even if no marijuana is sold in the village or if the board decides not to allow such businesses. “At this moment, we have no such dispensaries in town and have had no inquiries to open one,” Stewart said.
